Oakley came into our care this year to be trained as a service dog. After evaluating him and helping him come out of his shell, we concluded that tracking/trailing would be the best task for him. We began training him in Search & Rescue trailing mid 2024 and he has absolutely excelled in the game! He is the best trailing dog I have handled to date! (and I've handled over 65 trailing dogs)
ABOUT OAKLEY
He knows: Sit, down, place, heel, come, kennel, stay, wait, door boundaries, roll over, play dead, spin, twist, give me five, shake, paw, rest, bring, tracking, and is learning more every day.
Oakley is a pleasure in the home! Like most Aussies, he does want to be worked regularly. He is an amazing cuddler and loves leaning on you, laying on you, and getting massages. He'll follow his person around the house and will always want to be near you. He is vocal when he's happy and excited. He's developed a really nice off switch in the home since coming here, though he can become just a little antsy when he doesn't get to work his body or brain at least 3 times a week. He absolutely loves to learn anything and everything you want to teach him. He's food, toy, and praise motivated. Food is his highest motivation, with praise a close second.
He prefers women and is mildly submissive with men. He's good with cats, dogs, chickens, and rabbits. He is tolerant and neutral with children. Though he's shy around crowds of children wanting to pet at once, he does well with 1-3 at a time, and entire crowds of kids if they're not all paying attention to him at once. Mostly he just ignores kids, and most people, for that matter. He just wants to be with his one or two favorite bonded people.
He grew up a little under-exposed, though he did have a lot of exposure to small children, other dogs, and cats. We've had him out socializing during his time with us and he's come out of his shell nicely. He has a good startle recovery and is learning environmental confidence. He did well attending busy dog shows and national rally competitions with hundreds of dogs and people. He was able to calmly lay down amidst the chaos. He's been to many different stores, though he finds stores just a tad boring.
We believe he would be happy with an active SAR trailing team or performance sport home. He was previously in training for service work, though we likely won't place him as a service dog unless his new handler is active in SAR or dog sports and will work him in these areas.
We are located in Ohio, and we're willing to travel for the right home. (Travel fee may apply.)

Oakley has been trailing since August 2024 and he's been run on all common terrains, indoor and outdoor, with dog and human distractions. He's run cross tracks, some contamination, confined and open turns. ⅓ mile is currently his longest trail. He's followed different people successfully and understands starting with scent articles. He has a decent trained finish response. We're working on aging. He's done up to 4 hours aged so far. He lives for this game. He's precise and I trust where he takes me. He surprises me with his accuracy and brings me to the subject even when I thought they'd gone a different direction. He's still learning, of course, and does need help from time to time. But for how new he is to this, he is fantastic. I have trailing records for most all of his trails to date that I can transfer to his new handler. With his precision, he would also excel in competition tracking.
